Manannán meetings back 9 August, competition season starting

Manannán will resume Friday meetings from 9 August. Meeting times will remain at 1900-2130hrs until the end of the boating season in late September. As usual, all Scouts must have full uniform and boating gear at every meeting.

As we are now approaching the Sea Scouting competition season, please note the dates of the competitions detailed below. As part of the commitment to the Manannán troop, all Scouts are expected to attend additional training sessions for all competitions they are eligible for, and to be available to be selected for a team if required.

31 August: Sea Scout Rowing Regatta, Dún Laoghaire. Teams of 4 race East Coast Skiffs in each age category from under 13 to over 18. Punt and kayak races are also run.

14 September: Long Distance Skiff Race, Dún Laoghaire to Dodder Sea Scouts. Troops race their East Coast Skiffs from Dún Laoghaire Harbour across Dublin Bay to Dodder Sea Scout Den. The race is a relay, with u17s rowing from Dún Laoghaire to Costello Slip on the South Wall, u15s then rowing to Poolbeg Yacht Club, and finally u14s rowing as far as Dodder Sea Scout Den.

15 September: Sea Scout Triathlon, Malahide. Teams of three (one swimmer, one runner and one kayaker) compete against each other in u13, u15 and u17 age categories.

6 October: Sea Scout Sailing Regatta, Malahide. Teams of six (which must include two Scouts in each the u13, u15 and u17 age categories) compete in a team racing tournament. Each team has three Topaz or Pico dinghies with two Scouts in each.

12 October: Hamill Cup, Howth. Teams of five Scouts in the u13-14 age categories, Scouts are tested on their seamanship skills (including topics such as rowing, water safety, first aid, boat maintenance, sailing).

19 October: Fry Cup, Dún Laoghaire. Teams of six Scouts in the u15-17 age categories, teams are tested on their seamanship skills (including topics such as rowing, navigation, sailing, water safety and communications).

Details for collection: Our return flight on Saturday 27 July is expected to land in Dublin Airport at 2240hrs, so we would hope to be coming through Arrivals in Terminal 1 between 2300hrs and 2330hrs. *** CHANGE OF PLAN DUE TO POOR WEATHER CONDITIONS ***

Unfortunately, with heavy winds forecast for the Irish Sea on Sunday and Monday, the overnight trip to Howth will no longer take place this weekend. We will reschedule this trip shortly to take place over one of the coming weekends. This weekend, we will instead go out for a short training sail on Sunday morning. Please note updated details below.

Times:

We will be meeting in the Den at 1000hrs, and expect to be finished in the Den by 1500hrs on Sunday.

Gear list:

Packed lunch

PFD – all Scouts must have a 100N orange lifejacket for this sail

Waterproof leggings

Boating shoes/old runners

Rash-vest/old t-shirt/baselayer

Warm layer (fleece/training top, trousers etc.)

Raincoat/cag

Warm hat

Water bottle

Please note that this training sail remains entirely weather-dependent and is subject to last-minute cancellation.

Manannán meetings now 1900-2130hrs

With the boating season about to get underway, Manannán meetings will now run from 1900-2130hrs on Friday nights from Friday 10 May until further notice. In addition to full uniform as normal, all Scouts will need boating gear every Friday. This includes: lifejacket/buoyancy aid, swimming shorts, boating shoes/booties, t-shirt/baselayer that can get wet, rain jacket/cag and leggings, towel.
