Snorkel sessions update (2012)
Overview
For those who are interested I intend running a water activity around snorkelling. To participate in this will necessitate some pool training and one or two Lectures. I have organised a Pool for six one hour sessions. These will be based in St. Augustine’s pool on Carysfort Avenue. I will also run lecture sessions in the den. (Dates for lecture to be set)
On satisfactory completion of the pool and lecture sessions I intend running a series of open water snorkelling throughout the summer. This will be mainly based in Scotsmans bay / forty foot and will be using Sandycove as an entry / exit point. I will also organise one or two boat style snorkelling trips, where possible.
Detail
The pool sessions are set for Mondays from 6:00PM to 7:00PM at the pool side. IE: Changing rooms at 5:45PM sharp. The dates are as follows: April 16th/April 23th/April 30th/May 14th/May 21st/May 28th. Note that May 7th is not on the calendar as this is the May bank holiday. I would request that all try and beg, borrow or otherwise acquire a snorkel and mask, if possible, for the first session. I will however bring any spares I can borrow to give everyone a chance. On completion of the first pool session I would then expect all to have their own equipment by session two on April 23rd.
NOTE: DO NOT buy any gear, if you are unsure of what you are getting, without first speaking with me. I will advise on gear at the lecture. The lecture is to cover such topics as Safety and Snorkelling, Snorkel trip planning, Snorkel techniques, Maintaining gear etc.
Costs
This activity will be open to both Manannán and Fodhla. Given the initial response to my enquiry for interest I would expect 20 to 25 people at the pool. The costs here will be split across all and I am expecting this to be in the region of € 35-00 all in per person.
Equipment
For the pool sessions you will require a mask, snorkel and fins / flippers. There are pool and sea versions of these fins so do be warned. I would recommend using sea fins in the pool but you will also need booties if this is the case. For the open water sessions a semi-dry suit will be required. Also a hat, booties and gloves are needed. I will discuss in more detail around this equipment during the lecture session.
For more detail talk to your relevant PL or ask leader to contact me.
